Biennale Singapore 2008

Since it's opening in 11 September 2008, the Biennale(Bi-annual)Singapore 2008 exhibition has been a big success. Opening daily from 11am to 8pm, it is known to the largest and most provocative visual arts display by artists all around the world. This years theme of wonder invites all its viewers into a world that is thought invoking and one that is unfamiliar and pleasantly surprising. Apart from the 3 museum (Singapore Flyer, South Beach Development and City Hall) that one would have to pay for entry, most of its artworks are displayed around the central business districts in Singapore. As for the other venues such as Raffles City Shopping center and Suntec city shopping center, these places offer passers by free admission to the individual art pieces on display.

The display at raffles city for instance is as big as a billboard. Not only does it attract the attention of the people walking by, it is also a Big ADVERTISEMENT for the event itself. Unlike the more common television and internet advertising used by millions of companies around the world, the Biennale Singapore has found a more creative and effective way to not only publicize for this event but also leave people wondering (as part of their theme) Other art pieces around town like under the esplanade bridge and Suntec city shopping center will definitely catch the attention of Singaporeans passing by. More important, The organizers have taken into account of the target audience. More stereotypical Singaporean would go and take a look at the "free" exhibit. this is kind of media is one that is non exclusionary as anyone walking pass the exhibit will inevitably see it. However consumers have also a certain amount of control in this situation as. They can choose to stop and appreciate the artwork or just walk away.

In a world like today, the media plays an important role but it almost does not have as much control over its viewers as it had in the past because humans are learning that they have a choice. In today's world, the control of power between the media and humans are constantly changing with every advertisement. How have you lost your freedom of choice to the media today?

Indeed, we have a lot more forms of media to choose from. Comparing to the past where there are only radios and newspapers. We now have internet, TV, etc. With more forms of media, people dependency on a particular medium decreases and that would be another reason why media is getting less influential than the past.

wow, even though i do not know what the biennale singapore is all about, i have to salute to its efforts in putting up those ads for the public. besides non-exclusivity, the organizer is applying the media determinism theory whereby the medium itself is the message. just by looking at the ads itself, most people will know that it must have cost a fair bit of money. there is a possibility that this fact makes people stop and find out more about this exhibition.

lost my freedom of choice to the media? nope, i do not think so. it is more like i do not have the TIME to consume media materials... haha!

Oh, i went to look at that painting at Raffles City before. 2 different pictures are portrayed when you look through 2 different colored glass panes. A good way of playing with your sense of sight and color perception. It enlightened me about what IS creativity.

If you ask me, i would say that the Media is indeed very influential but in terms of freedom i have a different view. As individuals we are very much allowed to make our own choices, but whether we easily succumb to the products of the media is a whole different question. Nowadays the messages are so strong they change mindsets. Sports adverts induce the desire in sports fans etc. It all depends on the intensty of the product i feel.

the world is all about choices now. tv, radio, internet, newspapers, magazines, movies. the media is everywhere and we are spoilt for choice. and thus in this competitive market, our attention is gold to the advertisers through the media. shock advertisements and extremely suggestive ones are just a few examples on what is out there to grab our attention.

our choice is definitely there, but is this choice of ours actually promoting bad media products?

its so true when you say we have lost our freedom of choice to the media today. why, even on buses, i get to see the same whole advertisement and variety programs 2 times a day! it gives me no choice, i just have to take it, even when its so irritating.

yeah i feel that the media sometimes forces us to view things... though we kinda have the choice to close our eyes.. what they want us to see on bus rides and at MRT stations are repetitive and boring
